Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about getting your Pennsylvania
medical marijuana card? Find quick answers here.
Can certifications be issued via telemedicine in Pennsylvania?

Yes. Act 44 of 2021 grants practitioners the ability to issue certifications via synchronous interaction — meaning video or phone call. No in-person visit is required. The doctor reviews your medical history and documentation remotely to confirm a qualifying condition.

What happens after my physician certifies me?

If it's your first certification, you'll receive an email from the state with instructions to log into your patient account and pay the $50 annual ID card fee. Your card will then be mailed to your address within 7–14 business days.

At 60 days before expiration, you'll receive a state email prompting you to renew. Your new card prints automatically once renewal certification is submitted and the annual fee is current.

How much does it cost to get a PA medical marijuana card?

There are two costs involved:

✓ Advance Telemedicine consultation: $109 (new exam) or $89 (renewal)
✓ PA State annual ID card fee: $50/year, paid on the PA DOH website

Patients in Medicaid, SNAP, or WIC programs may be eligible for a reduction in the state ID card fee.

My card never arrived — what do I do?

If 3 weeks have passed since you completed all requirements and your card has not arrived, you can request a new card from within the 'Profile Settings' tab of your patient account on the PA DOH website. Cards are mailed to the address on file in your account.

I lost my card — how do I get a replacement?

Replacement cards are $25 for the first replacement and $50 for each additional replacement. As soon as you request a replacement, your old card is immediately deactivated for security — it will no longer work even if you find it later. Request a replacement from the 'Profile Settings' tab in your patient account.

My account is locked — what should I do?

Your account locks after 5 failed login attempts or an expired password. Wait 30 minutes, then click "Forgot your username or password?" on the login page. Follow the prompts to create a new password — a reset email will be sent to you (check your junk/spam folder if you don't see it).

What documents should I bring to my appointment?

You should have ready:

A valid Pennsylvania driver's license or state-issued ID with your current address
✓ Medical records documenting your diagnosis of a qualifying condition (highly recommended)
✓ A list of your current medications
✓ A device with a camera and microphone for the video call (or just a phone for phone-only)

How do I cancel or withdraw a certification?

Send an email to RA-DHMMDOCTORS@pa.gov with the doctor's full name, date of birth, registry ID or medical license number; the patient's full name, date of birth, and ID number; and confirmation that the practitioner wishes to withdraw the certification and will notify the patient in writing.

When can I renew my certification?

You can be certified again any time after receiving the 60-day reminder email from the state. Your new medical marijuana ID card will automatically go to print as long as your annual card fee is not overdue. There is no need to wait until your card actually expires.
