Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Connecticut's medical marijuana program
and our telemedicine service.
Can I get my CT medical marijuana card through telemedicine?

Yes! Connecticut allows physician certifications to be issued via telemedicine. Advance Telemedicine's CT-registered physicians can evaluate you via video or phone call and submit your certification directly to the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). You never have to leave your home to complete the physician portion of the process.

What is the process after my physician certifies me?

After your physician submits your certification to the CT DCP, you will receive an email with instructions to complete your free patient registration online at biznet.ct.gov. Submit your photo and CT ID — there is no state fee — and your medical marijuana ID card will be emailed to you within 1–2 days.

Does Connecticut have a specific list of qualifying conditions?

Yes — unlike Maine, Connecticut does require a specific diagnosed qualifying condition from the state's approved list. The list includes over 30 conditions such as cancer, PTSD, chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, HIV/AIDS, Crohn's disease, sickle cell disease, and many others. The DCP regularly reviews and adds new conditions to the list. See the full list above or call us at 1-800-835-9812 to discuss your condition.

How much cannabis can I possess as a medical patient in CT?

As a registered Connecticut medical cannabis patient, you may carry up to 5 ounces of cannabis on your person. This is significantly more than the 1.5 ounces permitted for recreational adults 21+. Possession beyond legal limits can result in criminal penalties.

Can I grow cannabis at home in Connecticut?

Home cultivation for medical patients is not currently permitted in Connecticut. Medical cannabis must be obtained from a licensed state dispensary. Adults 21+ are permitted to grow up to 3 mature and 3 immature plants at home for personal recreational use, but this does not apply to medical patients who are under 21 or to medical purchases beyond recreational limits.

What are the tax benefits of a medical card in CT?

Connecticut medical cannabis patients are exempt from state sales tax on their purchases. Recreational cannabis purchases are subject to Connecticut's cannabis tax (currently around 3%) plus applicable local taxes. Over time, this tax exemption can add up to meaningful savings, especially for patients who purchase regularly.

Is recreational marijuana legal in Connecticut?

Yes — Connecticut legalized recreational cannabis for adults 21 and older through Public Act 21-1. Adults 21+ may possess up to 1.5 ounces in public and up to 5 ounces at home. However, medical patients benefit from lower possession limits needing no age requirement for access, 0% sales tax, access to a wider range of therapeutic products, and purchasing priority at dispensaries.

What employment protections do Connecticut medical patients have?

Connecticut has strong employment protections for medical cannabis patients. Under CT law (PA 12-55), employers generally cannot discriminate against employees or job applicants solely because they are a registered medical marijuana patient. However, employers may still take action if an employee is impaired at work or if federal law requires drug testing (e.g., federal contractors, DOT-regulated positions). Always consult an employment attorney for guidance specific to your situation.

How do I renew my Connecticut medical marijuana card?

Connecticut now offers 6-month, 1-year, and 2-year certifications. To renew: (1) Schedule a renewal telemedicine appointment with Advance Telemedicine ($50–$169 depending on term), (2) Your physician submits the updated certification to the DCP, (3) Log into your patient account at biznet.ct.gov to complete the free renewal. Your updated card will be emailed to you within 1–2 days. We recommend starting the renewal process at least 30 days before expiration.
